College Scholarships

The South Haven Garden Club is pleased to offer a $1,000 scholarship to a recent high school graduate or current college student from the South Haven area that is pursuing a horticulture related field of study.


  1. Grade Point of 2.2 GPA or better

  2. Have graduated from high school and have a diploma or GED.

  3. Applicant must be an area resident or be a horticulture student at the Van Buren Intermediate School District Technology center. School districts included, but are not limited to: South Haven, Covert, Bangor, Bloomingdale, Gobles, Hartford, Coloma, and Fennville.

  4. Applicant must write a short essay detailing interest, activities and career goals related to gardening, landscape design, environmental issues, floral design or horticulture. Limit the essay to one page.

  5. Applicants must be attending an accredited higher education institution, ie. college, university, community college, or technical school.

  6. Scholarship is awarded in two installments of $500 each for two consecutive semesters upon proof of class schedules.

  7. Scholarship recipients may reapply annually.


Application Procedure:

  1. Print the Application form (link below) and fill it out.

  2. Write the essay requested above.

  3. Include at least one letter of recommendation from a non-family adult.

  4. Attach high school/college transcripts.


Selection Criteria:

Applications are evaluated and recipients chosen by the South Haven Garden Club Scholarship Committee.

The following Scale will be used for the evaluation of each application:

  • Applicants Letter/essay 40%

  • Academic record 30%

  • Listing of honors/ extracurricular activities/ work experience 20%

  • Letter of recommendation 10%

Mail the completed application information to the South Haven Garden Club Scholarship Committee by March 31st.

In the event of a change in a student’s major to one other that those listed above, or if the student withdraws from school; the balance of the funds must be returned to the South Haven Garden Club.
